The Science of GAS in United Nations, EPFL, and Geneva Observatory

February is being an intense month for GAS Science dissemination. Several very prestigious international organizations will host the presence of Chaired Professor Javier Martin-Torres to address key aspects of today space research as the relation between space technology and sustainable socioeconomic development, the habitability of Mars or the In Situ Resources Utilization on the Moon and Mars.

On February 18th, Prof. Martin-Torres will be part of the Swedish delegation to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs 56th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee, in Vienna. The Subcommittee will have before it a report on the United Nations/Germany High-level Forum on the theme “The way forward after UNISPACE+50 and towards ‘Space2030’”, held in Bonn, Germany, from 13 to 16 November 2018 (A/AC.105/1204). The Working Group of the Whole will consider the item on space technology for sustainable socioeconomic development.

On February 19th, one of the most cosmopolitan technical university of Europe, l'Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, will host the lecture “Is Mars Habitable?” by Prof. Martín-Torres where he will talk our knowledge about the Martian habitability conditions.

Finally, Space agencies are requesting for the first time ever, for ideas on In-situ Resources Utilization (ISRU) NASA ESA, instruments that can efficiently extract key resources (water, oxygen, etc.) from the Moon and Mars. But the international efforts of Mars and Moon surfaces exploration require a coordinated effort to respect the Planetary Protection protocols and to avoid the forward contamination. That is the main topic of the lecture of Prof. Javier Martin-Torres in the Geneva Observatory, on February 20th.
